The Los Angeles Lakers were swept in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs after a 115-110 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4. Despite the 0-4 series defeat, head coach J.J. Redick expressed pride in his team’s effort.
“We are very close to developing championship habits, communication, and consistency, but being close doesn’t mean winning a title. I’m proud of our players, their experience, and what we ultimately became as a group,” Redick said.
His optimism stemmed from the Lakers’ ability to stay competitive in Game 4 despite the absence of Luka Dončić. Redick acknowledged that reaching the playoffs was an accomplishment, but the team’s roster flaws were exposed throughout the season. With the championship goal in mind, he emphasized the need for significant adjustments in the offseason.
Regarding LeBron James’ future with the team, Redick offered little clarity. “I haven’t even thought about that. We’ll handle offseason things when the time comes,” he stated.
James’ status remains uncertain, as no discussions have taken place yet. The veteran star will need to consult with his family, Redick, and the front office before making any decisions, a process that could take considerable time.
On the team’s summer adjustments, Redick noted: “Our front office, Jeanie, and Mark all want to win a championship. We have to be realistic in our evaluation. We’re not good enough yet. Whether we need continuity or change is something we’ll decide in the coming two months.”
The Lakers’ primary weaknesses this season were interior presence and perimeter defense. Without addressing these issues, the team will struggle to contend for a title. Redick and the management are expected to prioritize finding players who can fill those gaps in the offseason.
