MLB: Seattle Mariners at Chicago White Sox

Miguel Vargas hit two home runs, Colson Montgomery added another, and Anthony Kay delivered five strong innings to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 6-1 win over the visiting Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Chicago.

The White Sox displayed their power for the second straight game, with Montgomery opening the scoring in the first inning. He launched a two-run homer off Seattle starter Luis Castillo with two outs, giving Chicago an early lead.

Castillo managed to escape a leadoff single in the second inning, but couldn’t do the same in the third. Sam Antonacci was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored when Vargas crushed a home run to left-center field.

Castillo has now gone eight starts without a win this season. He fell to 0-4 after allowing four runs on five hits over four innings. The right-hander struck out six without issuing a walk but surrendered multiple home runs for the second time in his last three outings.

Seattle’s offense struggled to generate momentum after scoring 12 runs on 12 hits in the series opener.

Kay (2-1) allowed three hits—all singles—and one run over five innings, walking two and striking out five, which was just one shy of his season high. He put runners on base in every inning except the second but kept the Mariners off the board until Rob Refsnyder’s sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The Mariners’ bullpen was effective at times but not flawless. Josh Simpson retired the first two batters he faced in the fifth before Vargas connected for a solo shot, extending Chicago’s lead to 5-1. It marked Vargas’ first multi-homer game since May 16, 2025. Teammate Tristan Peters also recorded two hits.

Julio Rodriguez had two singles for Seattle, which left seven runners on base and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Edgar Quero added an insurance run for Chicago with a forceout in the eighth inning.

Montgomery has now reached base in 21 consecutive games.

Left fielder Andrew Benintendi was scratched late due to neck stiffness.
