Just 34 days before Curacao’s World Cup opener against Germany, Fred Rutten has stepped down as head coach following mounting protests from players and sponsors. The Curacao Football Federation (FFK) confirmed the resignation on Monday, paving the way for Dick Advocaat to reclaim the role.

The 78-year-old Advocaat had led the Caribbean nation to its first-ever World Cup qualification but stepped down in February due to his daughter’s serious illness. His successor, Rutten, struggled to build rapport with the team. In March, Curacao suffered heavy friendly defeats to China (0-2) and Australia (1-5), sparking public discontent.

National team players and sponsors publicly called for Advocaat’s return, hoping he could finish the journey. With his family situation now reportedly allowing it, the veteran coach is seen as the ideal candidate. The FFK initially backed Rutten, but the unrest persisted—until Monday’s turnaround.

After an open and constructive conversation with the federation president, Rutten voluntarily offered his resignation. “It cannot be allowed that a climate develops which harms the healthy professional relationships among players and the coaching staff. Therefore, it is advisable to step down. Furthermore, time is pressing, and Curacao must move forward. I regret how things have unfolded but wish everyone involved every success,” Rutten said.

The FFK praised Rutten for showing exceptional class, professionalism, and responsibility. The board will meet on Monday to decide next steps, and a press conference is scheduled for Tuesday to discuss developments since February—possibly announcing Advocaat’s return. The World Cup squad has not yet been revealed.

Advocaat previously coached Curacao in 18 matches, winning 11, drawing 5, and losing just 2, establishing a strong foundation. With the tournament looming, the football community eagerly awaits confirmation of his comeback. Curacao will face Germany in their group stage opener, and the timing of this coaching change adds drama to their historic debut.
